The Latvian Wikipedia Marathon is an initiative of Norvik Banka, marathon partners are the University of Latvia, the State Language Centre, editors of the Latvian Wikipedia, Latvijas Radio 5, information support for the campaign is provided by Delfi, but awards to authors of the best articles will be provided by Samsung.
“The language is a basis of any nation, any state. For this reason, we encourage the Latvian society to be active contributors to the Latvian Wikipedia – write new articles on various topics. The purpose of our call is to care about the development of language and replenishing the Latvian Wikipedia by new articles so that the number of articles in the Latvian Wikipedia would exceed 100,000 articles by the centennial of Latvia”, emphasizes Oliver Bramwell, Norvik Banka board chairman.
During the six-month period of this marathon, a communication campaign will be conducted in media to encourage the Latvian society to get involved in enhancing Wikipedia. In this campaign, we will explain the significance of the Latvian version of Wikipedia, educate on forming articles in Wikipedia as well as encourage society to be active writers, offering valuable prizes. The jury formed jointly by the marathon partners, during six months, will be evaluating articles according to various criteria and at the end of the campaign, four authors will receive valuable prizes provided by our supporter – Samsung (one principal prize: Samsung Galaxy Note Edge and three prizes: Samsung Tab S 8.4 LTE).
Besides, during the intermediate period, in April this year, each of the marathon partners will encourage one week writing articles of Wikipedia on a specific topic and authors of the best articles will be awarded by special prizes of partners.
